Check-in and coffee


09:15- 10:45 


Introduction and group lecture by senior faculty, to address:

  • Statistics about securing grants
  • Logistics of how a study section/grant review process works
  • Differences in requirements for successful US vs. European vs. Asian grants
  • Anatomy of an excellent Specific Aims Page
  • Overveiw of Do's and Don't for other major sections with emphasis on keywords (significance, innovation, rigor, and premise) and how to keep abreast of changes
  • Q&A
10:45 - 11:45


Break out into Workgroup Discussions

Two Specific Aims pages will be discussed for 30 minutes each: 1 minute for the author to introduce him/herself and the intended grant mechanism; 10 minutes spent quietly reading Aims Page and making notes/ comments. Then, 19 minutes for group members to take turns providing feedback to their peer.


11:45 - 12:45



During Lunch, each participant will have 15 minutes one-on-one time with senior faculty advisor/s for additional feedback. This should include brainstorming of topic-specific mentors who can review a full draft proposal.

Group wrap-up, discussion, and Q&A

Discuss structure of post-workshop follow-up and goals for the year, identification of a working group “chairperson” to facilitate organizing post-meeting monthly conference calls.
