About Clonal Implications

Adult hematological malignancies such as acute myeloid leukemia are thought to arise through the gradual acquisition of oncogenic mutations within long-lived hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Genomic analysis of peripheral blood DNA has recently identified leukemia-associated genetic mutations within otherwise healthy individuals, an observation that is strongly associated with age. These genetic mutations are often found at high frequency within the peripheral blood, suggesting clonal dominance of the mutant (pre-leukemic) HSC. This clinical observation has been termed Clonal Hematopoiesis of Indeterminant Potential or CHIP, a state that increases both the risk of hematological malignancy as well as cardiovascular disease. In this ISEH New Investigator Committee Webinar, two leading figures in the discovery of Clonal Hematopoiesis and pre-leukemic HSCs, Drs. Sidd Jaiswal (Stanford University) and Liran Shlush (Weizmann Institute of Science), will share their seminal contributions to this new paradigm in hematology. This Webinar will be essential viewing for basic researchers and clinical hematologists alike.
