ISEH Eugene Goldwasser Fellowship
supported by Amgen

Critical Dates: submissions accepted March 10 through May 10, 2011

The ISEH Eugene Goldwasser Fellowship, supported by Amgen will be given annually to support the research activities of a deserving young investigator in the hematology field. Support will be a one-year, non-renewable $50,000 grant payable to the successful applicant's institution, for use as salary and/or other research support. The research may be basic or translational with a focus on experimental hematology, hematologic malignancies, hematopoiesis, or stem cell biology as it relates to hematology.

At the time of the application deadline, applicants must be postdoctoral fellows at an academic institution who are two to five years since beginning the research dimension of their postgraduate training if MD, MD/PhD, DDS or DVM or postgraduate if PhD degree. The fellowship must be held in an academic institution—for example, a medical school, hospital, or research institute. Both the applicant and the applicant's mentor must be ISEH members at the time the application is submitted or their application will not be considered. To become a member of ISEH, fill out the online application here.

Application Format

Applicants should submit a research proposal that should be no more than three pages long, excluding references. A one page personal statement including a description of how the planned experiments will be used as a foundation for the applicant's future research goals and proposed budget for the research fellowship should be included (salary and/or supplies, up to $2,000 USD for travel) The candidate's full curriculum vitae, mentor's biosketch in NIH or equivalent format, a supporting letter from a mentor (including confirmation that all infrastructure and resources required for the scholar's project will be provided), plus an additional reference letter must be provided.

Review Criteria

Submissions will be reviewed by the ISEH Awards Committee and rated according to the qualifications of the candidate and the scientific value of the proposed project. Preference will be given to applications demonstrating novelty or initiative on the part of the applicant. The award will be predominantly judged based on the candidate's potential than for a specific individual project. Thus, the application should include a vision for the broader implications of the planned work for an area of research beyond the one funded year (however, detailed experimental plans for future years are not required). The final decision will be made by the ISEH Executive Committee.

Submissions will be accepted March 10 through May 10, 2011. Decisions will be made by July and the award will be presented at the ISEH Annual Meeting in August.
