2012 Meeting New Investigators
Share |

"I feel the great advantage of ISEH is in it's size. In my opinion, at ISEH, there are a number of high quality speakers and poster presentations amongst only a few hundred people. This makes it very easy to interact with junior scientists, other new investigators as well as senior investigators. I have met more fellow investigators and made more contacts at ISEH than at any other meeting. I plan on being a lifetime member and meeting attendee for the remainder of my academic career.

– Stephen Sykes, a New Investigator who attended the scientific meeting in Vancouver.

ISEH continues to provide opportunities for young scientists to grow in their careers, including facilitating mentoring relationships with established ISEH scientists.

The New Investigator Committee is committed to creating opportunities for junior scientists to grow in their careers and become future leaders of the industry and ISEH.

  • New Investigator Career Discussion Events
Funding your research
This not to be missed session for New Investigators will discuss how to obtain research funding. The following topics will be covered:
    1. Identifying funding sources
    2. Writing specific aims and hypotheses with emphasis on what the reviewers will be looking for
    3. Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

A panel of three speakers, Dr. Elaine Dzierzak (Erasmus MC, Netherlands), Dr. Roger Patient (University of Oxford, UK) and Dr. Benjamin Ebert (Harvard University, USA), has been selected for this session. Each speaker will focus on one of the topics with emphasis on a relaxed discussion with plenty of interaction between panel members and New Investigators.

    Succeeding in your postdoc
This important session introduces a new presentation format for a New Investigator session at ISEH. Three speakers at various stages in their career; early postdoc (Dr. Sarah Ellis, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, AUS), junior faculty (Dr. Michael Milsom, Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Technology, Germany), and senior faculty (Dr. Nancy Speck, University of Pennsylvania, USA) will give a brief overview of their career experience before the audience is split into small groups. The speakers will then spend time with each group to encourage a frank and open discussion on different aspects of how to obtain and succeed in your postdoc position. Topics will include:

    1. How to choose and get into the right laboratory
    2. How to pick the right project
    3. What to do when the project isn't working out
    4. Transitioning into independence

Each speaker will have something unique to contribute to the discussion based on their own experiences that will assist New Investigators embarking through the postdoctoral stages of their careers.
