Meeting Description

Haematopoiesis represents one of the most tractable models of adult stem cell development and differentiation.

Transcription factor (TF) proteins have long been recognized as major regulators of blood stem cell development as well as the subsequent differentiation into the multiple mature haematopoietic lineages. However, it remains largely unknown how individual TFs are integrated into wider transcriptional regulatory networks, and how combinatorial TF interactions within these networks drive lineage specific gene expression programs.
During the webinar Dr. Göttgens will illustrate how his laboratory is using genome-scale resources to learn more about transcriptional control of blood cells. He will provide an overview of the nature of his laboratory recent and mostly unpublished data, and outline how they raise several fundamental questions concerning the functionality of transcription factor binding events, dynamic nature of cross-regulatory relationships and the interplay between the cellular environment and transcriptional programming.

Presenter Information

Berthold Göttgens, PhD

Dr. Göttgens is a Professor of Molecular Haematology at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, University of Cambridge. His long-term research goal is to decipher the molecular hierarchy of transcriptional networks responsible for blood stem cell development, and how perturbation of these networks causes leukaemia. A particular strength of his research programme is the combination of genome-scale experimental approaches with bioinformatic analysis and mathematical modelling. To date, he has published 130 papers, 111 of which are primary research publications. Dr. Göttgens is a member of the Steering Committee of the Wellcome Trust – MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, has been a member of programme grant site visit panels and also reviewed MRC Centre grants. Dr. Göttgens plays a leadership role in the most relevant international scientific society for his subject area, such as the International Society for Hematology and Stem Cells (ISEH), where he is a member of the board of directors and an Associate Editor of Experimental Hematology. He is a regular member of the BBSRC grant committees and co-organises the annual meeting of the UK research community on molecular haematopoiesis (MolHaem meeting; held annually at the Institute for Child Health in London). Dr. Göttgens has generated a total grant income over the last 2 years alone of over £4,400,000 as principal investigator and over £4,000,000 as co-investigator. Major funding agencies of include the BBSRC, MRC, CRUK and LLR.
